There is a significant difference between the 1988 fantasy picture directed by George Lucas and the new Disney+ series Willow. This time, the scope and inclusion of the hero’s journey have both been greatly expanded. A sapphic connection is at the centre of the epic story, and several important and supporting characters are people of colour. Why wouldn’t this ideal universe feature a variety of individuals, asks the series’ model/actor Adwoa Aboah to Vogue?
The realistic diversity of Willow surprised Erin Kellyman, who plays Jade, a freckled multicultural castle warrior who falls in love with a future empress. Kellyman, a native of the British Midlands and past participant in Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, says, “We’re just being in our parts.” Not too much of it is highlighted. I believe that people of colour may play parts in which their race is not the primary focus. It just concerns them as individuals and characters.
