A new book by Valentine Low called Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown talks about how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the royal family. The book says that at the time, Prince Harry wanted to meet his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, but he wasn’t able to.
The book says that Harry tried to set up a meeting with the Queen while he and Meghan Markle were in Canada for the holidays in December 2019. The Times said that Prince Harry thought they could solve the problem by email, but he was told that they needed to talk as a family.
Low says that the conversation couldn’t happen until January 29, and the book says that this “played into the story that the palace machinery or the rest of the family didn’t take them seriously.” Low says in the book that when Harry tried to set up a meeting with the Queen on his own, he was told that she was busy. US Weekly shared an excerpt from the book that said, “Harry was furious because that wasn’t true. It seemed that the courtiers had gotten in the way because they thought that the meeting with the queen was an attempt to kill the queen before Harry started talking to the rest of the family.”
But Harry and Meghan announced that they were leaving their royal jobs two days after they got back to the UK from Canada. They did this in a joint statement in January 2020.
