As the plane carrying Queen Elizabeth II’s body touched down in London, crowds gathered along the route to Buckingham Palace.
The military C-17 Globemaster took off from Edinburgh, Scotland, and landed Tuesday night at RAF Northolt, which is an air force base in the western part of the city. When the body arrived at the facility, Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, British Prime Minister Liz Truss, and a military honour guard were there to greet it.
The queen died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in northern Scotland. She was 96 years old and had been on the throne for 70 years. Her body is now making its last journey.
It will be driven through the huge crowds of people who had gathered on the side of the road in the pouring rain to pay their respects. At Buckingham Palace, the casket will be given to the late queen’s close family, which includes King Charles III.
