About 7.5 million people, including world leaders and dignitaries, will attend the Queen’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in London on September 19.
Members of the Royal Family must wear black dresses, suits, and military uniforms. The veil, which the Royals wear when they are in mourning, is another important piece that has been around for a long time.
Kate Middleton also wore a black netted veil to the funeral of Prince Philip. And it is now thought that both Kate and Meghan will wear the veil to the funeral for the Queen.
Page Six says that the ornament and the meanings associated with wearing it go back to the Victorian era. After Prince Albert, whom she loved very much, died, Queen Victoria wore a veil for the rest of her life.
Page Six again quotes royal historian Jessica Storoschuk, who says that the practise goes back much further.
People thought that the piece was “armour” and that it would hide their sadness from others. She also said that the custom of wearing mourning veils “goes back several centuries and has its roots in monastic clothing.”
In 1952, to honour their late father King George VI, the Queen and Princess Margaret wore full black veils.
Wallis Simpson died in 1972, the same year as her husband, the Duke of Windsor, who used to be King Edward VIII.
Queen Elizabeth II chose not to wear one to show how sad she was about the death of her husband.
Page Six says that people are also likely to wear pearl jewellery and veils to the funeral. Queen Elizabeth II was known for having a lot of expensive pearls.
This week, Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, and the Queen Consort, Camilla Parker Bowles, all wore pearl jewellery as a tribute to the Queen. Some of the pearls they wore belonged to the Queen.
